Our Mission

Mental disorders have emerged as the primary contributors to the global burden of nonfatal diseases. Research has shown that among Asians, mental disorders such as depression tend to persist for prolonged periods, and individuals from Asian backgrounds are less likely to seek adequate treatment and care compared to other ethnic groups. The recognition of mental illnesses among Asians may be hindered by language and health literacy barriers, levels of acculturation, or somatic presentations.

Despite the evident need for more mental health caregivers within the Asian community, there is limited support available to help students complete the extensive educational programs required. Additionally, mental healthcare professionals often require graduate-level education and training.

Founded by Dr. Shuqiao Yao's family, friends, coworkers, and students, the Shuqiao Excellence Award is dedicated to continuing Dr. Shuqiao Yao's legacy by fostering the next generation of leaders in clinical psychology and enhancing public understanding of mental health, particularly within the East Asian community.

By nurturing promising talents and enhancing public understanding through strategic support of expert organizations, we aim to encourage education and researches in clinical psychology that will lead to better health outcomes and a deeper understanding of human psychology and mental well-being.

Our goal is to build a community of scholars who are not only skilled in their discipline but are also committed to upholding the values of integrity, compassion, and innovation that Dr. Shuqiao Yao exemplified throughout his career.
