Biography

Dr. Shuqiao Yao was a distinguished professor of clinical psychology and psychiatry at the Medical Psychological Center, Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University. He served as the supervisor of Ph.D. students majoring in psychology and psychiatry. Dr. Yao received his M.D. in 1982 and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1991 from Hunan Medical University.

In his prominent roles, Dr. Yao was the director of the Medical Psychological Center at the Second Xiangya Hospital and the Medical Psychological Institute of Central South University. Additionally, he held prestigious positions as the chairman of the Medical Psychological Board of the Chinese Psychological Society and the Psychological Assessment Board of the Association of the Chinese Mental Health.

Dr. Yao's research interests were primarily focused on clinical psychology, psychiatry, and clinical neuroscience, with a particular emphasis on the neural mechanisms of psychological effects on stress-related diseases. Since 2000, he was the primary investigator of more than 10 national research grants and three international research grants.

Dr. Yao's exemplary work earned him numerous accolades, including the Distinguished Scientist Award from the Chinese government in 2013, a national Award in Medical Psychology from the Ministry of Science and Technology in China in 2001, three Advance Research Awards in Natural Science from the Ministry of Education and the Hunan government in China, and was nominated for the Ziskind-Somer Research Award from the American Society of Biological Psychiatry.

Throughout his career, Dr. Yao published over 300 papers in domestic journals and more than 100 papers in international journals. He was the first author of more than 12 influential books, including the 5th and 6th editions of “Medical psychology” (by People's Medical Publishing House), and the 1st edition of “Psychology for Medical Students” (English Version).

Dr. Shuqiao Yao's legacy is marked by his profound contributions to the fields of clinical psychology and psychiatry, his dedication to education and mentorship, and his relentless pursuit of understanding the neural mechanisms underlying psychological effects on stress-related diseases.
